Youth Enrichment After School Café | YAB

After School Café

With so many teens and children facing challenges every day such as gang pressures, anger, violence and neighborhood issues, the Monument Crisis Center has set out to create a safe environment free of such distractions. The youth at the Monument Corridor have been assembling at the Monument Crisis Center since its opening in 2003 when teens would come from local high schools and tutor children from Cambridge Elementary School and Oak Grove Middle School. Finally, in September 2006 it became a formal program. The program is planned, prepared and executed completely by the local volunteer teens. Every tutoring session has a theme such as Memorial Day, Mother’s Day and Appreciation Day. For each day the teens prepare snacks, set out art supplies and mentor the children with their homework or various arts and crafts activities.

Goals:

  • Provide a safe environment for children to receive tutoring and finish their homework
  • Give children the proper tools to take full advantage of their education
  • Provide a nutritious snack

How you can help:

  • Donate school supplies for the kids
  • High-School students can volunteer as tutors
  • Donate snacks for the students. For example: sandwiches, fruits or juice.

Youth Action Board

The Youth Advisory Board, YAB was established in February of 2008 by the Monument Crisis Center in the hopes to reach at-risk teens in the Monument Corridor and provide an outlet from drugs, violence, gangs, drugs, alcohol, and becoming young parents.  The program began by recruiting local middle and high school students to join YAB.  The requirements include filling out an application and a recommendation form to be filled out by a teacher. Applicants must then attend an interview with the Coordinator of the program, the Executive Director of the Monument Crisis Center and the President of the Board of Directors. Professional attire is encouraged. Once a group of 10 students were selected to become YAB members, they began to attend weekly meetings to discuss the issues that affect them and what they could do about it.  Since then, the YAB has been unstoppable and they continue to create more opportunities for service and leadership in the community.
