Community Education ESL | Emergency Preparedness

ESL

The ESL program started in 2004 with a few volunteers that identified the need in our community for learning English. The majority of our clients are immigrants who speak little or no English. They have been receiving basic conversational classes that help them get around in their everyday lives.
The classes have been evolving throughout the years. Today we have ten regular teachers and a 12 week cycle, and different practical topics are viewed each week. Each student is provided with a dictionary and encouraged to participate in all sessions.

Educational Goals

  • Provide basic education of the English language including:
    • Common phrases.
    • Introduction to proper pronunciation.
    • Basic grammar.
  • Gain confidence in a classroom.
  • Encouragement for the students to continue their education.

Current Program Accomplishments:

The ESL classes helped many of our clients. Some of them were able to find a job once they improved their English; others are able to help their children with homework. Whatever goal they had, their lives became easier, being able to express themselves outside their comfort area of family and friends.

How you can help:

  • Donate new notebooks, pens and dictionaries for our students
  • Become an ESL teacher or TA (some of our teachers started with no teaching experience, and ended up doing great!)
